In a sudden change to the tournament schedule, Americas Cardroom has extended its $5 Million guaranteed promotion, with four $500k GTD Million Dollar Sunday Main Events. Each comes with a buy-in of $250+$20.
The first three Million Dollar Sundays (MDS) produced massive overlays. totalling $559,500. Americas Cardroom CEO Phil Nagy told Rakeback.com that he had only budgeted for overlays of $500k for the five planned events. Running five $1 million guaranteed events in quick succession was a bold ambitious plan, but losing $200k per event turned out to be just too much for Phil’s nerves.
The last two MDS have been turned into four $500k GTD tournaments using exactly the same format, but at half the buy-in. The total guaranteed for the $5 million promotion remains the same. Each still offers the chance of a six figure score, as the winners are guaranteed first place prize money of $100,000.
Dates for the new events are:
In retrospect, it is tempting to say that Phil was just too ambitious about the impact of the $1 million guarantee. It’s something which no other poker network can offer US players, but this early in the seasonal upswing in online poker, it looks like the plan was a bridge too far.
The switch to $500k guarantees on the other hand, looks like a great marketing move. Each MDS Main Event will be preceded by the same promotions, including the Mega Satellites, but the lower buy-ins are likely to open the field to many more players.
Phil is still risking overlays, but the MDS Main Events could well now attract many more of the casual players he wants to bring to Americas Cardroom. “Average Joes not Poker Pros” is the Americas Cardroom tag line, but of course softer fields mean a much better ROI for serious players. The change in guarantee may well attract both types of player.
November Niner Josh Beckley will be playing the new events, and live streaming his experiences on Twitch. He's a long time player at Americas Cardroom, and will be getting in penty of practise for the WSOP Main Event Final Table next month.
The $500k events could also become a regular Sunday fixture, giving Americas Cardroom the biggest guaranteed tournaments of all the US facing poker rooms. The $1 million guaranteed MDS are likely to continue, but on less frequent basis. If Rakeback had to guess, we’d say that Phil will try to put them on maybe once every two or three months, replacing a weekly $500k event.
Players at Americas Cardroom who registered their accounts through Rakeback.com have access to additional satellites for the MDS $500k Main Events. Our players can enter two private tournaments which take place on the Friday before each MDS Main Event at 5pm EST.
