The Global Poker League (GPL) will consist of 12 professional poker teams from around the world. Franchises are expected in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Toronto, Sao Paolo, London, Paris, Prague, Barcelona, Moscow and Hong Kong.
Teams will be announced on February 25th, 2016. The GPL will have two, six team conferences. GPL Americas and GPL Eurasia.
The teams will be selected during a draft, much like any other professional sports league would do. Players in the Global Poker Index (GPI), ranked in the top 1,000 as of January 1st, 2016 will be invited to enter the GPL draft.
Every qualifying player that consents to sign up becomes part of the GPL Draft Pool. Each team will feature a five-player roster.
The GPL will introduce a number of additions to live and online play to make the game more engaging for the viewer.
It’s basically, an immersion of live and online poker to offer the viewer a more engaging experience, and all the action will be streamed live online. GPL broadcasts will also include weekly pre-game shows featuring expert analysis.
Just like any other professional sports league, the GPL will have a regular season and a postseason. Regular season play will include 12 weeks of competition played across online platforms, live in studio matches and feature events played at selected venues within “The Cube”.
The postseason, or in this case The GPL World Championships will be played live in the United States at a top tier facility during the summer of 2016. Exact dates and place have not been released as of print.
Rakeback.com will continue to monitor the new Global Poker League and any developments in the near future.
