Since then, they’ve become considered the world’s foremost “live tournament poker” player ranking authority. The GPI rankings will be used later this month during the Global Poker League player draft.
The GPI assesses a players’ performance over a three-year period. Tournament field size, buy-in, and recent tournament cashes are the main factors used to calculate the rankings of each player.
The index currently ranks over 300,000 poker players around the world. The GPI rankings are updated on a weekly basis.
Every year, the player atop the leaderboard is crowned Player of the Year. Last year, it was Byron Kaverman winning 2015 GPI Player of the Year honors.
Thus far in 2016, the Top 10 is dominated by Americans with one German and one Brit (noted PokerStars grinder Stephen 'stevie444' Chidwick). Steve O'Dwyer (pictured) leads the way.
These GPI rankings will be at the forefront for the Global Poker League player draft. Only players ranked in the top 1,000 are eligible to be drafted. The draft is set for February 25th in Los Angeles, California.
