PokerStars Proxy Guide

Pokerstars logo, black Does your computer connect to the Internet through a proxy server, or do you need to use a proxy to be able to access PokerStars? Here's a PokerStars proxy guide from PokerStars support, with information on how to connect to PokerStars.com with a proxy.

U.S. players: Please note that currently PokerStars cannot accept any players residing in the United States, or with a physical address in the United States – proxy or not.

If your system accesses the Internet through a proxy server, you will need to make PokerStars' software aware of it by adding the following lines to your "user" or "user.ini" file, which is a configuration file stored in the PokerStars directory.

To do this, you will need to change a line in the text file "user" or "user.ini", the file is the same and may appear different if extensions are hidden. You may be able locate this file if you can access the main lobby then click on Help -> Open My Settings Folder.

Alternatively, the "user.ini" file will be found in different folders depending on your Operating System which you can locate using the following instructions.

For Windows XP and older:

Double click My Computer on your desktop or start menu
Double click C: drive to view your hard drive
Double click Program Files folder
Scroll down and double click on PokerStars (or PokerStars.NET)
Locate "user" or "user.ini" and make the changes below

For Windows Vista:

Click Start
Type the following or copy/paste into the Search and press Enter:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\PokerStars (or PokerStars.NET)
Locate "user" or "user.ini" and make the changes below

Make sure you have closed the PokerStars software. Load "user" into Notepad or your favorite text editor (don't use a word processor). You can do this by double clicking the file or by right clicking the file and select "Open With" and choose "Notepad".

Here is how the two sections should look after your modifications:

You must substitute the name of your PokerStars proxy server and its port number above. For example, if your connection's proxy server is proxy.corporation.com and runs on port 8080, you would use the lines:

httpproxy=proxy.corporation.com:8080
httpsproxy=proxy.corporation.com:8080

Ask your systems administrator if you are unsure of your proxy server settings or are unsure whether your connection uses a proxy server.

Unfortunately the PokerStars software does not have the ability to transmit a password to a proxy server, so it is impossible to get the software to work with an authenticated proxy without the use of third party tools. As these tools are either extremely complex to setup, or are commercial solutions, our strong recommendation is to use a different network connection to play our games.

Third Party Proxy Tools

If you would like to explore the third party tools options to proxy PokerStars, this is done at your own risk and PokerStars will not take any responsibility for any issues related to them.

The most popular third party proxy tool is an application called Proxifier. You can read more about this software at the following website:

Proxifier is commercial, proprietary software (so you will have to pay a fee to use it after the trial period), but it is probably the easiest way of tunneling the Poker Stars client through an authenticated proxy. For reference, you will have to tunnel these components:

PokerStars Update (PokerStarsUpdate.exe)
PokerStars GUI (PokerStars.exe)
PokerStarsCommunicate (PokerStarsCommunicate.exe)

All of these files can be found in the PokerStars folder.

Please check with your systems administrator before bypassing the proxy to ensure this is allowed. If you are unable to utilize this type of bypass then you will need to play our software on a different network.
