Some, even most might agree. But, what does Phil himself think? He’ll say Doyle, or Chip, or avoid the question all together. He’s modest. But his numbers do not lie, and they are staggering. Live tournament earnings of over $23,000,000. Online cash game winnings over $14,000,000, and that includes a recent $5,000,000 downswing. His live cash game winnings could exceed these numbers combined.
He most recently won the 2015 Aussie Millions High Roller ($250,000 AUD buy-in) event for $1,713,285, again. This was his 2nd straight win in this event and his 3rd in 4 years. Last year’s win earned him a massive $3,573,600. His win in 2012 was good for just over $2,000,000 more. Back to back, 3 out of 4 wins in the same event for over $7,000,000 playing against the best high stakes poker players in the world. Proof enough?
Phillip Dennis Ivey Jr. was born in Riverside, California on February 1st, 1976. His family would relocate to Roselle, New Jersey just three months later. At the age of 17 he would begin to cut his teeth on the poker tables of Atlantic City. This required a 4-hour round-trip bus ride and a fake ID each time. He did this nearly every day for two years. He didn’t start out as the best, but he put in the hours and learned from all of his mistakes, slowly mastering the game over time.
He won his first WSOP bracelet in 2000. In 2002 he would win 3 more, becoming just the 4th person to accomplish the feat then. He has won 10 bracelets in all, these span over 15 years, and include wins in just about every variation the game has to offer. He has a World Poker Tour title as well. He excels in all forms of the game. He is a regular in the highest online cash games, playing often on Full Tilt Poker. He plays in the biggest live cash games in the world, from Las Vegas to Macau. In all, he has 26 tournament titles.
Phil Ivey is respected by his peers and feared at the poker table. Away from the table he enjoys golfing and watching sports. He is a gambler at heart, and a high-level thinker. He has beat casinos at Baccarat for millions of dollars on occasion. This has led to two separate “edge sorting” lawsuits against him. He lost one case, with the other still pending. Either way his knack for finding the smallest flaw in your game, or in this case your casino’s cards, is genius.
This is for sure, Phil Ivey is a wrecking ball on the felt, and at just 39 years old, he is showing no signs of letting up. So is he the “best poker player of all-time"? We’ll just have to see. But the good news is - we get to watch it all happen on the poker table.
