Anyone that follows the drama at the poker forums knows that Tom “durrrr” Dwan is a feared online poker player. He’s also the top money winner year to date according to Market Pulse. He’s held on the top spot for some time now and when you take away a few negative swings, he’s really been on top of his game for months.
Phil Ivey on the other hand has been lying low (in relative terms) with his online play. More or less lurking near the top rankings, he had been quiet until November rolled around. That’s when he made a run on Full Tilt Poker, taking on all comers at Hold’em and Omaha. This week alone, he’s up $431K and within a $50K hand of taking over the top spot from Dwan. In total, “durrrr” has $2,792,168 in winnings while Ivey has $2,745,456.
While it hasn’t been stated publicly there’s probably some personal pride involved. Ivey represents the old school and Dwan is without question, new school. Ivey has over $10 million in lifetime tournament earnings; Dwan has, well, nowhere near that amount. Ivey wants to prove that he’s one of the greatest to play the game, winning bracelets as well as cash games, online and live. He’s certainly on a pace to do that and I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if he grinds it out until New Years to make sure he’s on top of the leader board by the time 2009 rolls around.
