The European Poker Tour circuit offers poker players some of the most exotic locations but few can truly be called poker in paradise. The Atlantis resort in the Bahamas has become the home of tournament poker. For one week of the year, poker players from all over the globe make the trek to the Bahamas to escape the cold and immerse themselves in the beauty of the tropics and the heat of the action at the poker tables. In the end, one lucky winner will walk away with more than $2 million.
The two day starting format guarantees players some time for fun in the sun though 660 players would have to wait their turn to head for the beach as they competed in the first day of competition. The incredible turn out has guaranteed that this European Poker Tour tournament will stage the largest field ever assembled outside the United States.
All players began the day with 20,000 in chips and small blinds that allowed some maneuvering. Despite the high amount of chips, the field of players quickly dwindled with many of poker's notables finding themselves up for an early vacation. Among the pros to bust early were David Pham, Gavin Griffin, Chad Brown, Gavin Smith, Erik Seidel, Chris Ferguson and Online Player of the Year winners Isaac "WestmenloAA" Baron and Alex "AJKHoosier1" Kamberis.
Along with the many poker pros, the field was flooded with many top ranked online players. Many were unaware of each other's identities but quickly began to recognize playing styles. Once online phenom Johan "busto soon" Van Til was taken out of the tournament, the players at his table were told of his online handle and they quickly put two and two together after recalling some standout hands.
The overall chip leader of Day 1 was Felipe "mojave14" Ramos who ended the day with 360,100 in chips.
