Steve Weinstein is Borgata Winter Poker Open Champion

Steve "Thorladen" Weinstein has a long resume in the poker world as a proficient cash game player and backer of some of the online world's best players. He can now add live tournament champion to that list after wading through an unexpectedly large field of 1,017 players to win the 2009 Borgata Winter Poker Open in Atlantic City. This isn't Weinstein's first experience of success in a main event but he fell just short of the final table in two World Poker Tour championships. This time though, he dominated the field and earned the win.borgata-winter-open

The day kicked off with 27 players and in record time the number of players dwindled down to the final table. As is always the case, a few of the more notable players were also eliminated including Paul Spitzberg (26th), Bill Edler (17th), John Myung (16th), Andrew Barta (15th), Manelic Minaya (13th) and Ken "kenny05" Smaron (12th).  Also eliminated in ninth place was recent World Poker Tour final table player, Charles Marchese who took home $61,020 as a consolation prize.

Carl Pion started the day with the chip lead but was quickly knocked down when his pocket threes couldn't hold up against Robert McLaughlin's pocket aces, eliminating him in eighth place and giving him $83,902. Once the final table reached heads up play, Todd Terry held nearly a 4-1 chip lead over Weinstein. Despite those odds, Weinstein was able to double up and eventually take the lead when his top pair beat out Terry's flush draw. Within the hour, Weinstein held top pair of aces took out Terry's busted open ended straight draw to take home the tournament win and top prize of $658,405.
