New Jersey Senate Passes Internet Gaming Bill

By Scott Carlson, Rakeback.com Senior Writer

New Jersey Online PokerThe New Jersey State Senate passed a bill on Monday allowing intra-state gaming on the internet. Amazingly, there was little opposition to the bill with 29 in favor and just 5 opposed.

The news comes just one week after the bill was approved for debate on the Senate floor. The bill now must be approved by the New Jersey Assembly and then signed into law by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie before it would become law.

The bill would help the struggling casinos in Atlantic City, who would host the sites. The casinos have seen revenues drop significantly over the past year do to gaming now being allowed in the neighboring states of Delaware and Pennsylvania. The bill calls for a 15% tax on all revenue generated from the online sites.

In addition to the online gaming law, the Senate passed a bill allowing sports betting in the state. The bill now must be passed by the Assembly before being put on the ballot for New Jersey residents to vote on.

If all bills are passed, New Jersey could have a leg-up in the industry if HR2267 is passed at the federal level. New Jersey could be the new home of online gaming.
