The Partouche Poker Tour may have been running the same time as the World Series of Poker final table, but it’s arguable that there was much more drama taking place in Cannes than in Las Vegas. Not only did Vanessa Selbst, one of the hottest tournament players in the world, take down the PPT in Cannes, France, but there was also a player disqualified prior to the start of the final table.
It was announced that prior to the start of the final table that German, Ali Tekintamgak had been disqualified for cheating and that his winnings would be donated to charity. Partouche Poker Tour officials said that there was clear video evidence of him cheating.
The disqualification may not be the only repercussions Tekintamgak faces. The videos have been handed over to the French Fraud Authority. It’s entirely possible that the French Fraud Authority could file charges against Tekintamgak that could result in jail time.
Amazingly, this wasn’t the first time Tekintamgak has been caught cheating. Tekintamgak was found cheating at the European Poker Tour’s Main Event in Tallin this year. Video evidence showed that he was using hand signals from fake journalists and bloggers to indicate what hands his opponents were holding.
PPT organizers have said that if he is found guilty, “let’s hope he is banned from all the tournaments in the world.”
While this drama shook the poker world, it certainly shouldn’t take away from the impressive performance of Vanessa Selbst. In route to the championship, Selbst outlasted such noticeable names as Tobias Reinkemeier (finishing 8th) and Soren Kongsgaard (6th).
In heads-up play, Selbst defeated Raphael Kroll. In the final hand, a short-stacked Kroll pushed all-in with K-6, while Selbst made the easy call holding pocket queens. The win netted Selbst €1.3 million.
