European States Cooperate on Online Gambling

By Nathan Carroll, Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

Eu GamingA special committee of the EU government recently published a report entitled The Council Conclusions on the Framework for Gambling and Betting in the Member States of the European Union. The document reports that the EU members have agreed to undertake a number of steps aimed at increasing cooperation in the arena of online gambling. These include streamlining the administrative process, sharing their best measures with regards to responsible gambling, and cooperating on consumer protection measures and the integrity of sports betting.

The European Gambling and Betting Association, a non-profit organization founded in 2007 by seven leading European gaming operators, issued a press release celebrating the report's assessment. The secretary general of the organization, Sigrid Ligné, is optimistic about the council's conclusions, saying, "The importance of these conclusions for online gambling in the EU cannot be overstated. . . . The EGBA commends the Belgian Presidency for its hard work and this remarkable result."

Under the current system of online gambling in the EU, several  different countries, including Estonia, France, and Italy, have established intrastate networks that are walled off from international competition. As cooperation increases among the EU member states, industry insiders and eager poker players alike hope that a more widely focused licensing regime can lead to a bigger and more inclusive online gambling network.
