Rakeback.com - Don't play poker without it

Canada to Enter Online Poker Arena?

Canada PokerIt appears the Canadian government is looking into expanding their gaming operations on the internet, including poker. Back in July the British Columbia Lottery Commission (BCLC) opened Playnow.com, a web site where residents of British Columbia can play the lottery, bingo, casino games and even place bets on sporting events. This marked the first jurisdiction in North America to offer online casino games.

A Toronto Sun article published today indicated that other Canadian provinces are looking into adding online casino games and possibly poker in the near future. The provincial governments are looking at online gaming as a potential new source of revenue. According to H2 Gambling Capital, online poker alone generated $4.8 billion in annual revenue.

PokerStars initially opened up operations on Canadian soil on the Kahnawake Mohawk Reserve in Quebec before moving to the Isle of Man. Additionally, according to Calvin Ayre, the technology companies that created Bodog were originated in Vancouver, British Columbia. It appears that the knowledge base to operate a successful online poker company are already in place. The next step is to construct a plan for online poker in Canada.

It will be interesting to follow the progress of the Canadian provincial lottery commissions to see if they opt to open their own operations or if they attempt to go the route of HR 2267 in the United States and act as regulators of online gaming operations.
