Italy PokerAccording to data released by the Italian gambling regulator, AAMS, Tuesday, the Italian online gaming market grew by 28% in 2010, with tournament poker accounting for the bulk of this growth.

The skill gaming category saw an increase of 34% in action for 2010. Most of the revenue in the skill gaming category is from tournament poker, and with the upcoming launch of online poker cash games in February, those numbers are expected to double in 2011. Total revenues from all skill games increased from the 2009 total of €2.35bn to €3.15bn in 2010.

Skill games, combined with fixed odds sports betting, accounted for 93% of all remote gambling revenues in Italy last year.  Sports betting grew 11% last year to €1.35bn from its €1.22bn total of 2009.

The AAMS released a statement saying that the dominance of skill games and sports betting, combined with bingo’s strong surge over the previous year has confirmed that those product lines are “better suited to use online.” The three of these product lines amounted to over 96% of turnover from the territory during 2010.

In addition to the launch of poker cash games in February, online casino games are set to debut in the Italian market in June of this year.
