Three Italian players and two French casino employees have been detained by French police for cheating. The alleged fraud took place at Les Princes Casino in Cannes, shortly before the WSOP Europe event came to the town.
During their first visit to the casino, the Italian players won over $60,000. The suspicions of the casino security staff were aroused, and after an internal investigation, they called in the French Police.
The investigation discovered the cheaters had prepared a deck of cards with marks that could be seen by infra-red light. They wore contact lenses which enabled them to know exactly what cards the other players held. The French dealer switched decks so that the gang could cheat.
On their second visit to the casino, the police were waiting. The gang repeated their earlier performance, this time winning over $20,000. When they attempted to leave the casino they were detained by the police. A second employee, who worked at a different casino in Nice was also arrested.
The French newspaper, Le Parisien, reported that the Italians had “links to organized crime”. One of the accused men’s lawyers said, “He had come to the Cote d'Azur with a friend to have a good time and only brought a pair of sandals, a towel and a pack of cards, but that doesn’t make him a cheat”.
