EPT Berlin Robber Finally Foiled

by Daniel Smyth, Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

The 2010 EPT Berlin began like any other tournament - chips were being riffled, cards were sailing into the muck and blinds and antes were being stolen without so much as a hint of intervention from security. All of that changed in the blink of an eye when a group of armed robbers stormed the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin and began stealing chips in a very different way.

Dressed in black jackets and ski masks, the men headed straight for the cash box and proceeded to wrestle with the lone security guard. The fracas eventually ended after the men made their escape with over $300,000 in cash, but not before the cardroom had been completely cleared of shocked poker players.

Eventually the tournament restarted, while the criminals headed for the hills with their takings; no doubt patting themselves on the back for their sterling work. However, things didn’t quite work out for the bankroll bandits, in particular the mastermind behind the operation.

After his footman received a custodial sentence, a 30-year-old man has recently been charged with a series of offences related to the incident, including armed robbery and assault. After a lengthy trial the man behind the robbery was given a 6 year prison term for his involvement in the theft in March 2010.

All in all, it transpires that the man was guilty of hiring and instructing the 4 criminals, as well as driving the getaway car and distributing the cash amongst the chip swindlers.

It goes to show that if you aggressively steal too many blinds, you're likely to get caught.
