Alleged Bellagio Chip Thief in Custody

By Ian Hiaring, Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

Bellagio Las vegasLast December, the Bellagio was the scene of one of the most memorable crimes in recent casino history when a man parked his motorcycle outside the casino, walked up to a high stakes craps table with a pistol and walked out the door with an estimated $1.5 million in chips.

Wednesday night, 29 year old Anthony Michael Carleo was arrested after attempting to sell high-denomination chips taken in the robbery to undercover Las Vegas police officers.

Carleo is the son of Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge George Assad, and was booked Thursday morning on robbery, burglary, and drug trafficking charges.  He is behind bars without bail.

The ironic twist is that Carleo attempted to sell the chips while being a guest at the same hotel he’s accused of robbing on December 14th, the Bellagio.

The chips taken in the robbery ranged from $100 to $25,000, and it was speculated that the robber would have a great deal of difficulty cashing them in without being caught, particularly the higher denomination chips, which are thought to contain a radio frequency identification device (RFID) that would make them extremely easy to be flagged and identified if cashed.

The robbery at the Bellagio is thought to be committed by the same person who robbed the Suncoast Casino on December 8th, due to similarities in the methods used, but so far there have been no charges brought against Carleo in relation to the Suncoast incident.
