Joe Comartin, a member of Canada’s House of Commons, introduced a bill to parliament last Friday that would allow Canadians to bet on individual sporting events.
Currently, the only legalized form of sports betting available to Canadians is operated by the government-run lottery Pro-Line. Betters must select winners in three or more sporting events under the current model.
Comartin is pushing for more modern method of legalizing and regulating sports wagering, stating that Canada needs to “…bring it into the 21st century.”
The bill would allow Canadians to bet at casinos on individual hockey, football, baseball, basketball and soccer games.
The Windsor lawmaker cites the underground sports betting system spawned by Canada’s restrictive betting laws as a reason for updating the country’s sports betting laws.
“Sports gambling is a multimillion-dollar industry which operates underground and unregulated throughout Canada,” said Comartin. “This bill will help take a large chunk of revenue out of the hands of organized crime.”
