Once again, Canadian Sorel Mizzi has found himself in the news. Less than two months after being named Bluff Magazine’s 2010 Player of the Year, Mizzi is at the center of a cheating dispute between himself and 2010 WSOP Main Event Runner-up John Racener.
Mizzi is no stranger to cheating controversies. He had his Imper1um account banned from Full Tilt Poker in 2007 when it was discovered that he purchased another account belonging to Chris Vaughan during a deep run in a $1 million guaranteed tournament, and went on to win. Mizzi’s Imper1um account was unbanned just last week by Full Tilt.
The latest firestorm for Mizzi began with a Sean Deeb post on the 2+2 forums Saturday about an alleged incident between Mizzi and Racener that took place during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure last month.
In the post, Deeb details how Mizzi and Racener were playing Chinese Poker during some down time during the PCA, and Racener noticed Mizzi dealing himself a joker from the bottom of the deck.
From Deeb’s post:
“So they are rotating the deal and the dealer gets the 14th card in 1 of their hands. Racener has played a ton of live poker so he tends to know procedure and what to look for. He notices sorels shuffling is leaving the 2 bottom cards in place they haven't moved from the deck. As he starts to deal he notices the first card he deals himself is the bottom card of the deck. He keeps watching sorel and once he's done dealing john says hes going take the hand with 14 cards in it sorel goes into a tantrum saying it's his hand his deal. John says I know what you were doing picks up the 14 card pile and shows the bottom card which is the joker. He tells sorel he's not paying him whatever amount hes down 5-20k and that he's a scumbag etc.”
It should be noted that Deeb’s post is second-hand information, but it was confirmed that Racener asked him to post it, and Racener confirmed everything in it was true during an interview with quadjacks.com.
During the interview with quadjacks.com, Racener says Mizzi has been “literally crying” to him to keep this quiet via text messages and phone calls. And that Mizzi even offered him a piece of his tournament action to keep this under wraps.
Mizzi responded on 2+2 with a post of his own essentially denying any accusations of cheating, calling them “…absurd, far-fetched and severe that the magnitude of the lies almost make me at a complete loss of words.”
This essentially comes down to a “He said…He said…” situation. Nobody was in the room with Racener and Mizzi during the incident to confirm if either account of the evening is true, and both will stick to their guns defending their respective sides of the story. Sean Deeb’s involvement as the original poster on 2+2 could be seen as an issue, but Racener said he wanted Deeb to post it because he’s “not really used to posting on there and not familiar with the forum at all.”
Racener said that would eventually post a more detailed description of the incident on 2+2 himself.
