The New York Times decided to devote some ink to the next breed of up-and-coming online poker players and chose Daniel 'jungleman12' Cates as the featured subject.
Cates is making quite a name for himself these days. He’s currently crushing Tom Dwan in the Durrrr Challenge on Full Tilt Poker, and has certainly made his presence known at the high-stakes tables where he has a reputation of taking on all-comers and playing a fearless brand of poker that’s extremely difficult to prepare for, and even harder to face when the time comes.
In the article, titled Online Poker’s Big Winner, it’s quite obvious that author Jay Caspian Kang spent a great deal of time with Cates (he notes in the article that the two shared five meals together over the span of five days). But about halfway through the article, it becomes clear that the piece is more than just a profile of Cates.
Kang delves into the mindset of the latest batch of “young guns” to make their names in the online poker world, even suggesting at one point that video game experience translates to success when multi-tabling 12-16 tables in online poker.
It’s an interesting read, if for no other reason than to make yourself even more jealous of those who don’t blink an eye after an $800K losing session.
