Did you ever think that Sammy Farha ever thought to himself…”Man, just give me one more crack at Moneymaker…” Well guess what Sammy… that chance is coming thanks to the people at the World Series of Poker.
Earlier this week, the World Series of Poker announced a special series of heads-up matches that will take place this summer in Las Vegas.
The idea is simple. Take a few of the most memorable heads-up matches in the World Series of Poker Main Event history and have a good old fashioned “do-over”. It sounds gimmicky…cheesy…and certainly unnecessary... but you know what…it also sounds like a boatload of fun.
Do you think Chris Moneymaker could run that same epic bluff against Sammy Farha today, eight years after the fact? We may not find out for sure, but at least we’ll get to see the two players go head-to-head once again.
There will be three matches, but only two are set in stone at this time. The third will be determined by a fan vote conducted on Facebook.
Matchup #1 is a rematch of the aforementioned Farha/Moneymaker battle, which originally took place in the 2003 WSOP Main Event, and provided the spark for the poker boom of the 2000’s and beyond.
Farha and Moneymaker will play a best-of-three match, and the first game will see them start with the same chipstacks they had when they entered heads-up play at the 2003 WSOP Main Event final table. The second game will have the chipstacks reversed, and the third game, if needed, will have each player start with even stacks.
Matchup #2 will feature two of the most successful WSOP players in history, as Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan sit down just as they did 21 years ago when Hellmuth denied Chan his third consecutive Main Event title. Hellmuth and Chan will play one game and will start with even stacks. In the 21 years since this historic matchup, these two players have a combined 21 bracelets, and have proven to be among the best tournament players in the world.
The third matchup will be determined by a vote of fans, and there are four options to choose from. We here at the RakeBack.com News Center are personally hoping that Seidel gets a chance to bury his Rounders reputation here.
In order to vote for the matchup you’d most like to see, you’ll need to become a WSOP Facebook Fan.
The matches will all take place right in the middle of the World Series of Poker on June 2nd at the Rio in Las Vegas. ESPN will be covering the matches with all of their usual glitz, and will include footage from the original matchups and promises interviews from players with thoughts on the original matchups.
