Eric Baldwin Top Pick in ESPN WSOP Fantasy Draft

By Ian Hiaring, Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

ESPN Fantasy PokerOn Tuesday Phil Ivey was number two in the poker world. Dethroned as the “best poker player in the world”…in fantasy land that is. No really…fantasy land…as in fantasy poker.

Yes, fantasy poker exists. It’s on ESPN of course. The network has offered Fantasy Professional Bass Fishing in the past, how could poker possibly slip under the radar of fantasy gaming these days.

The 2011 ESPN Fantasy Poker League held its annual pre-WSOP draft Tuesday, and maybe it wasn’t a surprise that Phil Ivey wasn’t selected with the top overall pick, but it certainly was a surprise that Erik Seidel wasn’t the player selected ahead of him.

Eric ‘basebaldy’ Baldwin was the number one pick in the draft, which consists of teams fielded by poker professionals and media members. A few of the notable team owners in the league are Daniel Negreanu, Mark Seif and Dennis Phillips. Chad Holloway from PokerNews.com is an owner, and has a complete rundown of the draft picks if you’re interested in seeing how it all went down. Holloway is the defending champion thanks to Michael Mizrachi’s deep run in the Main Event last year.

Ivey was selected number two overall and the red-hot Erik Seidel was the third selection. Beyond that, the draft list reads like a who’s who in poker.

The team owners were given eight rounds to select players that they think will perform well at the 2011 World Series of Poker. Points are awarded for running deep in bracelet events. Of course, the deeper the run, the more points are awarded.

Now that the Fantasy Poker teams have been selected, it’s time to start up the 2011 World Series of Poker.  Action starts on May 31st and you can stay tuned to the Rakeback.com News page for all the breaking information on the activities.
