U.S. Attorney General Speaks About Online Poker

U.S. Attorney General Eric HolderIt seems like the topic of online poker has been seeing quite a bit more coverage in the mainstream financial news these days.

In an article posted on the Forbes website Tuesday, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder offered some thoughts on online poker in the United States.

Holder defends the indictments handed down to the major players for the largest poker sites in the world last month at a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

“We have to enforce the law as it exists and there are laws on the books with regard to Internet gambling that we have to enforce,” said Holder. “The case that we brought for instance in the Southern District of New York involved pretty substantial amounts of money and big financial institutions and I think those cases are appropriate.”

When pressed on the question of whether poker is a game of skill or chance, he avoided the question claiming that he wasn’t able to answer because it was “beyond my capabilities”.

Phil Ivey’s name was even mentioned when Democratic Representative Steve Cohen from Tennessee tried to make a point, evoking a familiar quote from the film Rounders in the process.

Cohen asked “Do you think Phil Ivey is just lucky? He is the world’s greatest poker player.”

And for reference, here’s the famous Mike McDermott quote from Rounders.

“Why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table of the World Series of Poker EVERY YEAR? What are they the luckiest guys in Las Vegas?”

Holder stated he wasn’t sure he knew who Phil Ivey was, but added, “…but I am sure there is some degree of skill that is involved, some degree, I am not a poker player myself.”
