Two new millionaires were minted this week when Rupert Elder and Taylor Von Kriegenbergh scored victories in EPT and WPT events, respectively. Each made his way through a wild final table packed with talent and full of suckouts and lead changes.
The latest EPT event was held in San Remo for the fourth time. With past winners like Team PokerStars Pros Jason Mercier and Liv Boeree, the EPT stop has become quite prestigious. This year, 987 players ponied up the tournament buy-in, creating a prize pool of €4,786,950.
UK native Rupert Elder would go on to win a final table that included Team PokerStars Pro Max Lykov and the talented young female player Xuan Liu.
Although an unlucky all-in confrontation sent Liu home in 3rd place, many are speculating that the 25 year old has a bright future ahead of her. With a confident table presence and the skills to go with it, Liu may be headed for a PokerStars sponsorship.
Elder bested German Max Heinzelmann in the heads-up portion of the tournament, aided by a crucial hand where he hit a full house on the river to take down his opponent's flopped nuts. With his win, Elder earned €930,000 and a gold bracelet worth €16,200 from EPT sponsor Shamballa Jewels.
Taylor Von Kriegenbergh entered the final table of the inaugural WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown with a strong chip lead, but managed to lose that advantage not just once, but several times during the course of play.
This final table was also graced by the presence of a female player, unusual in this male-dominated game. Abbey Daniels put up a tough fight but ultimately went down in 4th place after her A-8 couldn't win a race against the eventual runner-up Curt Kohlberg.
By the time the heads-up battle between Kohlberg and Von Kriegenbergh got underway, the latter had managed to soundly regain the lead, and he held a nearly 5-1 chip advantage. Just eight hands later, Von Kriegenbergh had the WPT trophy in hand, along with $1,122,340 and $25,500 entry to the WPT World Championship to be held later this month at the Bellagio.
Congratulations to the two winners!
