It had to end sometime. Entering the final table as the chip leader, Hansen liked his chances, especially after the match came down to five handed. After several orbits of a very tight passive bubble, Gus Hansen was caught getting out of line and was busted by the chip leader Mikhail Smirnov.
While Gus has had an insanely profitable month, he was still very disappointed as he left the final table of the 100K Aussie Millions Challenge empty handed along with cash game legend Sam Trickett, Sorel Mizzi and Nam Le also ran cold as they rounded out the lame ducks who missed out on the money.
Tony G was able to sneak into the first cash spot as he earned a prize of $242,000. While home country favorite Joe Hachem wasn't able to win a title here, his 3rd place finish and $330,000 prize did mark the biggest cash score he has personally had in an Australian event.
Once Hachem exited, Dan Smith and the Russian Mikhail Smirnov battled it out in what ended up being an intense three hour heads-up match. In the end, Smith was able to claim the victory on a coin-flip as his pocket deuces beat Smirnov's Q-6 suited.
Mikhail wasn't too disappointed after receiving his $616,000 cash prize and he'll have plenty of reasons to celebrate. After winning $1,012,000, an excited Dan Smith stated that he'd be taking his winnings and going to the upcoming Super Bowl.
