New Jersey Online Gambling Legislation Pushed Back

By Matt Kaufman, Rakeback.com Poker News Editor

Earlier this month we were pleased to bring you news that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had vocalized his desire for his state to get into the online gambling industry. When asked about the topic he simply responded "New Jersey should be in that business."

Despite support from what seems to be every necessary direction, the bill which would make it possible for New Jersey to get involved failed to make it to a vote this session.

The bill's sponsors, Raymond Lesniak and Jim Wehlan, will have another opportunity to convince the state's lawmakers to consider the proposed legislation. Unfortunately for poker players in New Jersey, that opportunity won't come for at least 6 weeks.

Due to the United States Department of Justice's reinterpretation of the Wire Act in December, the passing of this bill should be all that is necessary before the state can get to work on the infrastructure necessary to make in-state online gambling sites a reality.

Despite this 6-week setback, many experts believe that Atlantic City casinos may still be able to host online poker sites by the end of 2012.
