Brian Hastings Wins WSOP Event #12

By , Rakeback.com Poker News Editor

The World Series of Poker started off with several hiccups but has been running relatively smoothly over the last few days. Since our last WSOP update, we have 5 new bracelet winners to report on:

• Event #9 - $1,500 NLHE Re-Entry - Ashkan Razavi for $781,398
• Event #10 - $5,000 7-Card Stud - John Monnette for $190,826
• Event #11 - $1,500 PLO - Vincent Van Der Fluit for $265,221
• Event #12 - $10,000 HU NLHE - Brian Hastings for $371,498
• Event #13 - $1,500 Limit Hold'em - David Arsht for $211,921

Of those 5 events, Event #9 and Event #12 drew the most attention, but for very different reasons.

Event #9 was the first re-entry event in the history of the WSOP. A re-entry event is one where players can enter the tournament for a 2nd time - but ONLY on a different starting day of play. If, for example, a tournament has two starting days, players can buy in one time on each day - NOT twice in a single day.

Despite those rules, a handful of players including Will "the Thrill" Failla managed to enter Event #9 twice on Day 1b. Failla apologized, and the WSOP has pledged to issue refunds to both the players who were allowed to re-enter and anyone who was knocked out by those players.

Event #12 drew attention because of its winner - online legend Brian Hastings. Hastings is one of the most successful poker players in the history of online poker. He's best-known for his 2009 heads-up matches against Team PokerStars Pro Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom, but now he'll also be known as a WSOP champion.

Over the next 2 days, we recommend poker fans pay attention to Event #15, a $5,000 buy-in 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo tournament. At the time of this writing, 19 players remain in the event including Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Bryn Kenney, John Monnette, Todd Brunson, Eli Elezra, and Allen Bari.
