WSOP Women - Three Final Tables For Ladies in Early Events

By , Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

This year's World Series has so far seen very impressive performances from female poker players, with three final tablists winning $219,739 in prize money across the first few bracelet events.

It's no coincidence that they're some of the most feared and respected ladies in the game today, and together hold over $10 million in gross tournament earnings. Here's a quick recap:

Event #2 - $1,500 No Limit Hold'em

Vanessa Selbst Finishes 4th ($161,345)

By all accounts, PokerStars Team Pro Vanessa Selbst steamrolled the field of this early NLHE event. 2,101 players entered, and Vanessa outlasted all but three.

Vanessa was the last woman to win a WSOP bracelet, back in 2008, and narrowly missed out on adding a second to her impressive resume this week.

Vanessa currently sits in second place on the women's all-time money list, less than $750k behind leader Kathy Liebert.

  • Career Live Tournament Earnings - $5,089,923
  •

    Event #3, $3,000 Mixed NL / PLO Heads-Up

Annette Obrestad Reaches Quarter Finals ($28,409)

Lock Pro and Norwegian online star Annette Obrestad made it to the final four tables of the heads-up No Limit Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha event.

Reaching the final eight from a field of 317 players is an impressive achievement in a HU event, which typically attract a very high calibre of play.

Annette is currently fourth on the women's all-time money list, and holds one bracelet for her victory in the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Main Event, when she became the first ever female world champion.

  • Career Live Tournament Earnings - $3,766,977
  •

    Event #4, $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo

    Xuan Liu Places 6th ($29,985)

Canadian Xuan Liu is relatively new to the live tournament scene, but has fast been making a name for herself. 622 players entered the Stud 8 event.

The young pro already has final tables at the 2012 PCA and 2011 EPT San Remo under her belt, both scores over $500k. After just two years on the circuit, she's amassed over a million dollars in winnings.

The university of Waterloo graduate has a keen mind for equities and probabilities, having studied as a Chartered Financial Analyst and with experience in swing trading.

  • Career Live Tournament Earnings - $1,285,851
  •

Congratulations also go to Patricia Baker of FL, USA for her runner-up finish in Event #1, the $500 Casino Employees Event. She took home $43,754.

Make that four final tables, and over a quarter of a million dollars in prize money so far for ladies in this year's series. Will there be a female bracelet winner in 2012?

    Update:

Yes! The most recent female bracelet winner since Vanessa Selbst in 2008, is now none other than Vanessa Selbst once more, in 2012. She took down the $2,500 10-game bracelet, showing that her poker prowess is not just limited to No Limit Hold'em.

In total, Vanessa's WSOP 2012 cashes totalled $446,605. She's averaged almost a million dollars per year in earnings for the last six years.

Incredibly, two female players bubbled the main event final table. Norwegian online pro Elisabeth Hille finished 11th, and Gaelle Baumann from France - chipleader after Day 2 - exited in 10th. Both showed that the trending Twitter hashtag #YearOfTheWomen was well deserved.
