Borgata $2m Winter Open Cancelled After Fake Chips Discovered

The event was stopped after the existence of the fake chips was reported to the New Jersey regulator – the rest of the prize money will be held in trust until they complete an investigation. Of 96m chips in play, something between 1m and 5m were reported to have been found to be fake.Borgata Winter Open

The Borgata’s President Tom Balance said: “Thus far, investigators have found that one or more tournament entrants improperly introduced a significant number of counterfeit chips into the tournament, gaining an unfair advantage and compromising the integrity of play for the event.”

4,812 players entered the premier event of the series. At the moment when the event was cancelled, Allard Broedelet was the chip leader, with over 10% of the chips left in play. 423 players had already been paid out. Of the total $2.4m prize pool, over $1.4m remains to be won – if the event can be restarted.

The Borgata has partnered with PartyPoker to offer online poker in the newly regulated market in New Jersey. Last week figures from the regulator showed that the partnership had managed to secure almost 45% of the market since launching in late November.
