US Online Poker Under Siege

On March 25th, a United States Judiciary subcommittee held a hearing on bill HR 707. This bill would, in essence ban states from regulating online poker. It would also shut down the successful systems already up and running in Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey.

Restore America's Wire Act

The so called “Restore America’s Wire Act” (RAWA) bill, could return the United States’ progress toward regulated online poker, back to pre-Black Friday status. This would be a grave injustice to the freedoms of all US residents.

The Judiciary subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations held the hearing. Opponents of your freedom to play online poker, include several politicians, and are led by Billionaire and casino mogul, Sheldon Adelson. Adelson is CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. The fact, the words “crime” and “terrorism” are in any way connected to online poker is a travesty unto itself.

The committee criticized safe online gaming technology and online gambling regulators, but called no experts within these fields to speak. The subcommittee can now justify the democratic process upheld through this hearing and move forward with the bill.

Moving Forward

It would appear that Adelson is looking out soley for his own interests and the Sands Corporations' bottom line, not the American public. The bill seems unjust, and should garner only a small chance of passing, despite Adelson’s deep pockets and defiance.

On the bright side, the bill does have great opposition from many as well, including the Poker Players Alliance. Visit the PPA to follow this matter and see how you can help. Rakeback.com will continue to provide details as they become available.

Perhaps, Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu summed it up best when he tweeted his opinion on the hearing, “Being well spoken or having an understanding of the topic you are debating is not required to be a politician.”

Well said Daniel, well said.
