DraftKings Enters the UK Market | Hires Ex PartyPoker Director

DraftKings is continuing the trend of aggressive expansion in the daily fantasy sports (DFS) industry, having recently acquired a license allowing them to operate gambling software in the UK.

DraftKings Enters UK Market

According to their press release, DraftKings UK will be operational by the fourth quarter of 2015. They plan to open a London office by the year's end.

An Industry Milestone

This represents a major milestone in DFS, the rapidly-growing variant of traditional fantasy sports.

Fantasy sports, which have been popular among American sports fans for many years, originally involved picking a 'fantasy team'of players for an entire season, and pitting them against other friends' fantasy teams.

With DFS, players get to make new lineups on a nightly basis, which means their teams aren't permanently crippled by things like season-ending injuries.

Each day can essentially be viewed as a new session, much like poker.

DFS is 100% legal in the US.

Poker Connection

Jeffrey Haas, former director of PartyPoker, has been appointed as DK's Chief International Officer.

His duties will include managing the new London office, as well as managing communications, analytics, customer acquisition, business development, marketing, and corporate partnership roles.

DraftKings CEO Jason Robbins stated that the company is looking forward to forming new partnerships with leagues and media outlets, and that there will be new sports and games added to the company's offerings.

DraftKings recently partnered with the World Poker Tour and send online qualifiers to each WPT stop.

The Future of DFS

While DK isn't the first DFS company to bring its business to the UK, it's certainly the biggest. Mondogoal is currently licensed and operating there; however, the only sport they offer is soccer.

Amaya, which recently acquired Victiv as the DFS platform for PokerStars, also has a UK gambling license and is expected to open its business there at some point.

For now though, DraftKings is the big fish on the other side of the pond. The DraftKings UK website is now up with a 'Coming Soon' message.
