It’s January, and that means it’s time for the premier poker event to take place in the Southern Hemisphere to kick off. The 2011 Crown Aussie Millions Series hit the ground running late last week in Melbourne Australia, and as usual, it should bring the biggest names in poker to the land Down Under.
The Aussie Millions runs from January 13-30, with 20 events on the schedule, including the $10,000 Main Event, whose list of top finishers in recent years includes Gus Hansen, Erik Seidel, Sorel Mizzi, and Kristy Gazes. The Main Event begins on January 23rd, but there are plenty of other events taking place both before and after the Main Event to keep players busy during the two plus weeks of the Series.
On the schedule once again for 2011 is the $100,000 Challenge Tournament on January 22nd. Last year Dan Shak bested the field of 24, ultimately defeating Phil Ivey heads up to earn $1.2 million. Also on tap is the Aussie Millions High Stakes Cash Game on January 24th, which has a buy-in of $200,000 minimum.
Action has been lively leading up to The Aussie Millions, with a $3K/$6K side game taking place, and there’s a rumor of a $250K heads up tournament in the works.
Tournament organizers are expecting close to 1000 entries to the Main Event, which would far exceed the record of 780 in 2008.
