Say Hello to the Global Poker Index

By Ian Hiaring, Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

Global Poker IndexWho is the best poker player in the world? It’s not an easy question to answer. Some people will swear up and down that its Phil Ivey. Ask someone else though and they’ll tell you that without a doubt it’s Phill Hellmuth and his 11 bracelets. Turn the corner and you’ll run into the loyal Doyle Brunson fans waving their “Hello Dolly” banners.

There’s certainly no easy answer to the question. Perhaps even more difficult, there’s no easy way to determine just how to answer the question.

Federated Sports + Gaming have come up with the Global Poker Index (GPI), which they tout as “A System for Ranking the World’s Best Poker Players.”

To be more specific, the GPI was developed to rank the top live tournament poker players in the world today. The rankings were developed by Annie Duke (the Commissioner of the Epic Poker League), Eric Faulkner (CIO of Federated Sports + Gaming), and Don Schlesinger (blackjack guru and numbers wizard).

The GPI will be providing the Epic Poker League (EPL) with seeding information for its Heads-Up event, which makes perfect sense as both the GPI and the EPL are owned by FS+G. Additionally, the GPI will be featured on PokerNews and USAToday.com.

The addition of the GPI alongside other statistical ranking systems in the sports world such as the Sagarin Ratings (NCAA football and basketball) and the RPI Ratings (NCAA basketball) in the USA Today could help in legitimizing poker as a game rather than simply gambling.

The detailed method for ranking the poker players can be found on the GPI Website and is certainly complex enough for us to provide the link rather than try and explain it. Suffice to say that a great deal of thought and time went into developing the rankings.

Without further delay, we give you the initial GPI top ten, through July 11th, 2011.

1. Jason Mercier
2. Bertrand Grospellier
3. Eugene Katchalov
4. Samuel Stein
5. Fabrice Soulier
6. Sorel Mizzi
7. Thomas Marchese
8. Tobias Reinkemeier
9. John Juanda
10. Vanessa Selbst

You can view the entire top 300 on the GPI website.

Editor’s Note: ElkY has taken over the #1 spot.
