A Couple of Boneheads from Day 2a of the Main Event

By Ian Hiaring, Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

If you spend any amount of time at the Rio during the World Series of Poker, you’ll eventually run into some pretty strange stuff. You’ll see all see all kinds of people, costumes, hats and hairdos. And of course you’ll hear all kinds of stories, some strange and some even that are outright bizarre.

Monday there were two such stories from the WSOP that we feel compelled to report on.

A ‘Not So Grand’ Entrance

Phil Hellmuth is known for his grand Day 1 entrances into the Main Event where he’s shown up as a race car driver, army general, Roman emperor and prizefighter. Love him or hate him, Hellmuth knows how to get people talking about him.

This year it was Hellmuth’s Day 2 entrance that had the room buzzing. Apparently Phil didn’t know/care/forgot which of the two Day 2’s he was scheduled to play and his starting stack of 11,800 chips was blinded down to around 7K by the time Mike Matusow persuaded security at Hellmuth’s hotel to break into his room.

Hellmuth’s Twitter timeline tells the story from there.

There’s no need to feel sorry for the poker brat, he finished Day 2 in relatively healthy shape with nearly 65K in chips. Oh yeah, he’s winning  that WSOP Player of the Year thing too.

Player Banned from Day 2 Seat

Carter Gill and Harrah’s don’t get along, that much is for certain. The rest of the details are a bit murky though.

Gill was banned from all Harrah’s properties after an incident that involved a woman’s clothes being thrown out of a window. That’s all the details we have on it though. It’s unclear if this happened after his Saturday Day 1c appearance in the Main Event at the Rio (a Harrah’s property) or if it happened sometime in the past. Either way Gill’s 49K stack was blinded off into oblivion on Day 2a.

Gill made numerous pleas via Twitter to find a way back into the tournament, but had no success and his $10K entry fee became dead money for the other 6,864 players in the Main Event.

So there you have it, if you make Day 2 of the Main Event, the lessons to learn here are:

A) Know what day you play on
B) Don’t get kicked out of a Harrah’s hotel.
