USA Seizes Bodog.com and Indicts Bodog Founder

By Matt Kaufman, Rakeback.com Poker News Editor

On Tuesday, the domain name “Bodog.com” was seized by United States Homeland Security. The seizure is in accordance with “a warrant obtained with the assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.”

Interestingly, the Bodog.com brand left the United States in July, 2011. Operations were moved to Bovada.lv in December, and Bovada is currently totally unimpacted by Bodog’s seizure.

Indictments of Bodog Operators

Bodog founder Calvin Ayre and three other individuals associated with the operation of Bodog Entertainment Group have been indicted in Baltimore, Maryland.

The indictment alleges that the men “did knowingly and unlawfully conduct, finance, manage, supervise, direct, and own all or part of an illegal gambling business” and that they are “in violation of the laws of the State of Maryland, to wit, Maryland Criminal Code Section 12-102.”

Calvin Ayre has already released a statement responding to his indictment:

“I see this as abuse of the US criminal justice system for the commercial gain of large US corporations. It is clear that the online gaming industry is legal under international law and in the case of these documents it is also clear that the rule of law was not allowed to slow down a rush to try to win the war of public opinion.

These documents were filed with the Forbes magazine before they were filed anywhere else and were drafted with the consumption of the media as a primary objective. We will all look at this and discuss the future with our advisors, but it will not stop my many business interests globally that are unrelated to anything in the US and it will not stop my many charity projects through my foundation. You can also follow this story here on the number one global online gaming news and entertainment site and the only site I will be doing interviews with for the next while… CalvinAyre.com.”

Quite unlike the individuals who were indicted on Black Friday, Ayre seems to be taking the news of his indictment quite lightly. He even took it as an opportunity to plug his website. One can imagine that if he ever deals with these charges he will fight them, but it is far more likely that Ayre will never been seen in the United States again.
