WSOP Europe Draws Record Numbers

By Ian Hiaring, Rakeback.com Poker News Staff Writer

Elio Fox, WSOP Europe Main Event ChampionIt seems like an eternity since the World Series of Poker drew to a close at the Rio in Las Vegas, but the final table of the Main Event is just around the corner, and we’ll get to know our November Niners soon.

In the meantime, the stage for the WSOP was moved across the Atlantic to Cannes, France for the 2011 World Series of Poker Europe.

This is the fifth year the WSOP-E Main Event Championship has been held, and the event is growing every year. The 2011 Main Event drew a record 592 entries and took six full days to play down to a winner.

It certainly was a tough field with many of the globe’s top professionals in attendance. When the dust finally settled, it was a quiet New Yorker who walked away with the gold bracelet.

Elio Fox, a 25 year-old professional poker player from New York emerged the victor after nine hours of final table play. For his efforts, Fox walked away with €1,400,000 ($1,927,310) as well as a coveted WSOP Gold Bracelet.

2011 WSOP Europe Main Event Results

Ben Lamb Locks-Up WSOP Player of the Year Award

The WSOP Europe marked the last chance for players (namely Phil Hellmuth) to earn points for the 2011 WSOP Player of the Year Award. Hellmuth did manage to add to his point total, and he currently resides in first place on the official leaderboard; but it wasn’t enough to give him a chance at finishing at the top once the WSOP Main Event is complete.

Ben Lamb is officially in third place behind Hellmuth and Chris Moorman, but his upcoming appearance at the final table of the WSOP Main Event will give him enough points to claim the WSOP Player of the Year Award, regardless of what place he ends up finishing.
