We recently reported on Co-CEO of PartyPoker (BWin.party Digital Entertainment) Jim Ryan and his strategy to find US partners. His hope is that online gaming or at least poker will be regulated in the USA. If so, it’s likely that the land based casinos will be given an advantage in getting licensed.
Our report was timely. Today Bwin.party announced a deal with MGM Casinos and Boyd Gaming. Together they will form a new company with Bwin.party owning 65%. The company will have full access to Bwin.party’s technology, which MGM and Boyd will both have the right to use in their own businesses.
MGM owns 10 casinos on the Las Vegas strip including the Bellagio. It also owns casinos in Mississippi, Michigan and Macau. Boyd runs 16 casinos, in 6 states.
It looks like a wise move if online poker does get regulated in the USA. Bwin.party must be worried that a pure online operator may not get a licence, and MGM and Boyd will be fully aware of how hard it is to develop a really good online gaming platform.
A number of billionaires are also getting geared up to enter the market. Donald Trump, Marc Lasry, Steve Wynn, Leon Black, David Bonderman, Lorenzo Fertitta, Steven Roth, Herbert Simon, and Sheldon Adelson.
They are all lobbying hard for legislation to regulate online gaming in the USA. Just this once, I hope the conspiracy theorists are right, because if these guys really do control the world, poker, the quintessentially American game, may be coming back to America.
