I like to stay disciplined (even when drinking) and play for less than 5% of my total to absorb the down swings. It seems to be a good number because I have not had to worry about buying in for months.
Another note: I give myself a treat monthly when my
rakeback is deposited in my account and play some games at a higher level. I may bend the 5% rule a little when I have the extra rake money available. It lets me take a little chance to win more without actually denting my bankroll.
