With 3 to a straight and two people showing serious interest on the flop, I check/fold the turn when the board doesn't pair. These cards are right in the worst range for a 3 straight on the flop because they are likely to hit some people very hard. There's also the concern about 10-10 (but less so... if the 8 paired on the turn and someone had 10-10... well, I am going broke here).

In a limit tournament, with this sort of action, folding an preserving your chips might just be a better play. It's unfortunate to have this happen and eat up a big portion of your chips before you know you're beat... but that's poker.
