Well I'm already familiar with this sort of system, as it used as standard in most bridge tournaments/team matches - yeah the card game bridge :P I think it works great in bridge, as it removes the whole 'what if you get better cards than someone else' argument, as everyone gets the same, so there's less luck involved I guess.
As for poker, I just find it hard to imagine it being used in a poker setting

I mean what if you have a big bluffing war, and basically at the end of the day it doesnt matter, just gets compared to the other table. A nice idea, but I just can't see it working in poker
