I think Annie Duke said it best when she said:

"When you get dealt two suited cards, ask yourself this question: 'Would I play these two cards if they were not suited?' If not, then it's clear what your action should be."

Granted, it depends on the factors mentioned by Irish, but in general, asking yourself the above will help to keep you from having some really tough decisions too often.
