Gappers Wanted to add a comment on your statement about gappers. The key is not to avoid them, but play them sparingly, as you would with connectors. Suited connectors are overrated, a one gap hand is not too much worse than the connectors. The straight is the optimal hand you want when playing these types of hands. Unless you have high connectors or gappers, top pair on the flop will present kicker problems. The flush play could also run into kicker problems (more rare) with connectors/gappers.
Play these hands on occasion (with reads, gut feelings, position, ...), but play them carefully, they are the type of hands you win and lose big pots with.
