I would have checked raised the flop. Then you can see where he is. If he smooth calls he most likely has an ace, if he folds you know he doesnt. But either way it will probably be checked down the rest of the way, unless he has a monster, then he will bet turn and you could get away from the pot. Just my opinion. This is if I was playing a loose aggressive player only. If I was playing a tight player I would have played it exactly how you did!!
