Default Always sit with max chips at ring games

there is one very important rule i've learned when playing ring games online:

SIT WITH THE MAX AND ENOUGH; YOU NEED AMMO TO FIRE AND SOME TO BLUFF.

try it

I agree with OP. The object of poker is to WIN the max, not lose the least. There is a lot of posts talking about how to lose the least, which is thinking backwards. You get max value for your hands, but if you don't want to think and just shove, or are scared of losing, then I guess buying in short is the way to go.

There is 1 rule for not buying in for the max and that is if you're playing short stack strategy when buying in for 20 bbs is enough. Otherwise buying in for the max is +ev. If you're scared to lose a buy-in then you're not properly bankrolled for that limit. If you're losing too much with a full stack then you're involved in too many hands you probably shouldn't be involved in or perhaps chasing too much.

What I really dont understand are those who buy in for 40-50 bbs, can anyone explain this because as far as I'm aware, there's no such thing as a mid stack strategy.

The value of sitting with the maximum comes from being willing and able to get all those chips in play when you have the best of it. If you are unable or unwilling to play for stacks or do not have the skills to play for stacks profitably, you might be better off sitting with less. Basically, if you are really bad playing the turn and river for post sized bets then you might consider sitting down with less so your making fewer decisions on those later streets. What you lose in equity from your monsters, you make up by reducing your bad decisions on the most expensive streets in NL.

Yeah, I think most people should sit with the max... at a level where they can afford to learn to play the whole way. But if you're self-aware enough to know your areas of weakness, then play in a way that reduces those areas the most.
