BETTER GET THERE - A JOURNEY

The purpose of this blog is to teach myself (and all the readers) how to become a successful poker player. This means starting from $2000 and working my way up to big games.

I will post statistics and strategies as well as stories and facts from the "real life" away from the computer.

Getting to be a successful poker player is not just about playing poker and thinking about it. It's also taking care of your health (both physical and mental), planning your future and other things that have nothing to do with poker.

Journey to big games starts now and I ... better get there.

When Small Stack Is All-in

Posted 26th August 2008 at 08:41 AM by BtrGetThere
I was playing in a $30 rebuy live tournament last Saturday ending up third. When we were three handed (three got money) two situations came up where our third, most inexperienced player made two tactical mistakes. I thought that these common situations are known by almost everyone and I can count on people playing accordingly.

1.

We were three handed and blinds were 500/1000. I had 30k, 2nd had 13k and third had 1k. Guy with the 1k was on button and folded. I was in the big blind and for my surprise the 2nd guy raised small. I glanced at my cards and pushed all in thinking that he must fold 98% of his range. Even bigger surprise was that he insta-called me with J8! Well he was ahead of my T7 and ended up winning the pot with a straight.

The lesson here is that you shouldn't risk your almost certain 2nd place and bigger cash with maybe anything but AA (KK). Third guy had only one big blind left and he would have been all in next hand.

2.

Same blind levels and I was on the button. Smallest stack was in the small blind with 500 left in his stack and 2nd largest stack was in the big blind. I limped on the button with AdJc and small blind went all in for 1000 and 2nd largest stack checked his option.

Flop was 6d8c2h. Guy with the 2nd largest stack bet small on the flop so I figured he had a real monster so I folded. When they revealed their cards smallest stack had 6T and guy who bet had Qc3c. Turn was 3 and river A so I would have ended up taking down the pot and we would have get rid of the smallest stack and secured both of us more money.

In these kind of situations when players are in the money (ITM) or in/close the bubble when there's a player all in either of the players shouldn't bet but their monsters in order to get the all-in guy out. The pot should be normally just checked down to have the best possible chance to get one guy out.

Most of the players know this. Just remember that you can't verbally or in other way agree doing this, that would be collusion.

I've seen people do this in tournaments. When a guy makes a bet with an all-in player, I usually call if the bet isn't large. about 70% this stops the action. If they keep betting, I assume they have a hand at this point.

I have been in that situation and did not have that good a hand but had I been in I would have won the hand and knocked the allin player out. What makes it bad is when that all-in player to then double up again on next hand and the next and is now chip leader and knocks me out with a bad hand with me having the Big Slick suited and losing on the river.!!!! BITES could kick myselfLOL
