BETTER GET THERE - A JOURNEY
The purpose of this blog is to teach myself (and all the readers) how to become a successful poker player. This means starting from $2000 and working my way up to big games.
I will post statistics and strategies as well as stories and facts from the "real life" away from the computer.
Getting to be a successful poker player is not just about playing poker and thinking about it. It's also taking care of your health (both physical and mental), planning your future and other things that have nothing to do with poker.

Bankroll management

Every serious poker player (without unlimited cash) should know the importance of good bankroll management. There is tens of thousands of stories about poker players how have lost all their (and others) money by not paying attention to bankroll management. My story is one of those and I hope everyone who reads my blog will tell different story.
Internet is full of guidelines for bankroll management and I've come to conclusion that a safe semi-conservative approach to small stakes games is as follows:
Cash games (NL/PL) – 40 buy-ins
For full ring games the requirement could be bit lower and for short-handed PLO games it could be higher so 40 buy-ins should be enough for the mixture of games I play.
MTT-tournaments – 60 buy-ins
Tournaments have lots of variance and therefore require big bankroll. If I'd play only MTT's I should have a bankroll of 100 buy-ins.
Dropping down in stakes is an essential part of good bankroll management. A good rule of thumb is that one should drop down in stakes when he's about 30-35% (12-14 bi) down from the minimum bankroll required for the level he is playing. This way you always have safe amount of buy-ins and the risk of ruin is small… and one more thing, having enough bankroll is a good way to prevent tilt.
Rules for my games:
My bankroll is $2000 meaning I play maximum of $50 buy-in cash games and maximum of $35 MTT's. I will drop down in stakes if my bankroll is less than $1350. I can play tournaments according to the 60 buy-in rule but I will not play $100 cash games until I have $4000.
Maybe I have some strategic content next time...

 | Good stuff. Its a very senseable and conservative approach, but I agree if you are a winning player (playing the proper percentages) than it would be almost impossible to bust out playing under those guidlines. |
