| If you are starting out, you may want to study a player's unique style. Compare them with others. Myself, I learned from watching a lot of TV, and analyzing. Play a lot of poker - even if it is for small amounts. $5...$10...$20...move your way on up until you reach a level you can afford and are comfortable with. Experience will teach you everything, and will allow you to develop your own unique playing style. |

| I've got one tip that I've found to be useful.. When playing no limit, analyze your situation in terms of implied odds more often then pot odds. For example, you put your opponent on two pair, but you have an open ended straight draw. He bets 3/4 of the pot. You know from watching the guy play that he will not be able to get away from his hand if you hit the straight, which means you'll get a turn bet and river bet off of him, so, in this case, you actually do have odds to make that call, but only if the guys stack is deep (if he doesnt have the money to put in on turn and river, theres no implied odds) also, when watching the tv games, try to predict what the different players are going to do (ie how much they will bet or raise, and why). I looove the Poker After Dark series that is on right now because you get to see almost all of the hands played at the table, and you'll notice, even the poker pros make the same mistakes you do sometimes, they just do them less often, and minimize their losses on them more effectively. Poker to me is a game of trying to trade small mistakes by yourself for a big one from somebody else. |

I think that's the balance, too, because so much of gaining skill in poker, to me, is patience, but then if I were to go too far that way, I would fail to take advantage of situations such as you described above. |

| I agree with r8rpwr, patience is the biggest thing that separates newbies from more experienced players. Newbies can be very impulsive, not waiting for the good hand or jumping in with both feet to a hand where the odds are not good. Wait for the good cards, they will come to you. |

I am not an expert on these, but I do sense the obvious ones, like the guy who bets with reckless abandon and raises every single hand. I love it when I have something good to call those guys with. Once they bust then the rest of us can enjoy the real game. |

| Or instead of a slow connection the player might just be playing many tables simultaneously, and taking time to make actions at other tables.
