Default building a bankroll when being a tournament player

HI,

As i'm not a really great cash game player, i tryed many ways to build my bankroll....

The most efficient as been by playing some Sit&Go as high as 10% of my bankroll but "NEVER" more, and some few multi-table tournament as high as 6% of it.

This is a really good way if you regularlly go on tilt, because you're not risking your total bankroll by staying on the same buy-in.

It is also a good way to progress as you can easilly go up in the buy-in structure, and give a go on the one just up to your usual level...

You may have some other techniques to build a bankroll;
So please, be free to give yours and your observations about mine.

10% of your BR in SnG or 6% in MTT is still waaaay too high to be honest - your risk of ruin is so high the way you're doing it now. I'd recommend, along with most people, that you have 20buyins for SnGs and maybe 50BI for MTT to avoid going broke.

Don't forget, even if you go on a big losing streak, this should prevent you going broke, and theres no shame in dropping levels to work your way back up

i do agree on the mtt bankroll.

For the S&G i'm in fact dropping levels if i don't have the 10%
I'm not doing a 20$ + 2$ S&G if i got less than 220$ if i have 210$ i'm going back to the level bellow (10$ for exemple) this way,i got a shot regularly on the level giving me some troubles till i'm making my way through....
But in a way, your methode is far more secure for the bankroll.
It's also a way to master in a better way each level of game.

The S&G are still a good way to build a bankroll efficiently.

Well like most people have already said, 10% of your bankroll is way too much to gamble with, or 6%. The good rule of thumb is when entering tournaments, to have at least 44 total buy-in's. So if you want to play in $10 + $1 SnG's and MTT's, your bankroll must be AT LEAST $484. You may think that that is small compared to your bankroll, but it's really perfect. Online and live, you can get a bad run of cards, and that would lead to you losing all your within 10 games (because you only have 10 buy-in's with 10%).

Most players are either cash game players, or tournament players. I can understand this, because they both take different skills and different mind sets, but it's always good to learn. Try sitting down at a small limit table with a small portion of your bankroll at cash games. Learn experience in cash game play. But for this, it depends on which games you are playing. If you are playing limit games, then you should have 300 Big Blind's. So lets say you want to play at a $0.50/$1.00 limit Holdem table, that means your bankroll has to be AT LEAST $300. But if you want to play no limit games, then you must have AT LEAST 20 total buy-in's. That means that if the max buy in for a $0.01/$0.02 NL Holdem is $5, then your bankroll must be AT LEAST $100.

(a little tip for cash games, always buy-in for the max. Sitting down at a table with a short stack is just asking for people to bust you with huge stacks.)

If it works for you, then by all means keep on going. But this proper bankroll managment includes if you go on bad luck streaks, or if you go on tilt, ect.

A good website for proper bankroll managment that I use is this site here:

Online Poker Bankroll Management

Hope this helps you and everyone else who reads this.
