Default Busted Bankroll

If you busted your bankroll what would you do?

Quit Poker?
Reload?
Try to build again from freerolls?
Play with play money only?
Deposit on another site?
Other?

I often see threads about people busting their bankroll and asking others what they should do now. If you simply reload, then your true bankroll is actually higher - maybe unlimited.

As mentioned in another thread I have 4 online accounts that I started with a matching sign up bonus and after the bonus cleared I withdrew my original deposit. I will only deposit to receive another RELOAD bonus and always withdraw my original money.

So, after sign up bonus clears I am always playing on profits. To this day, I swear I will close any account that is costing me my own money. Sometimes I wonder if I should just play outside of my bankroll to either busto or "go somewhere".

I had my roll busted actually quite recently. I had a horrible run of luck. I actually had a friend who knew my skills and he spotted me $400 and told me to play 4 $.5-$1 9 person tables till I eityher had 200 left or over $1000. Well after some good hand and some luck 5 hours later I was at $1,104. He told me he just wanted the $400 back but I transfered him $600. SO now I have 504 to start the rebuild process with. But I would suggest that you play some fake money tournaments too boost your confidence if needed and then either wait for a good reload bonus or try a new site. I prefer UB and FTP. Both have great first time deposit bonuses and UB has awesome reload kickers that I use to boost my roll there. Its now over $6.5K there and I have only put on around $800 lifetime and have withdrawn $4K so far. FTP seems to be a break even site for me though.

The key here is to understand why you have gone bust, which is going to be one of 2 reasons. Either 1) Your are not as good as the people your playing against, or 2) you were buying in for to big a portion of your bankroll, so it was swallowed by variance. Now, if it is the first reason, that is, your bankroll was swallowed up gradually without you buying in for more than 1/15th - 1/20th of your roll at a time - then either give up poker or drop down in stakes and find some players you can beat. If the reason is 2), and you are better than those you are playing against but had your bankroll taken out by a bad run, then fill up your account as much as you like and in the long run it will be a profitable decision.

I began my online career with a $200 deposit late last year. A few months ago I cashed out the $6000 i had made and took a vacation. When I got home I wanted to get back into poker, but had no bankroll and really didnt want to start at the bottom. So I used my credit card to deposit $600 in my full tilt account. This didnt even feel like a risk. I was playin $30 sngs (1/20th of total), and know I have an edge over the field, so had no qualms using my own money (or the credit companies!) as my bankroll. After 3 weeks i have it up to $1800, and am back in the $50 sngs.

But yeah, the key to deciding what to do in your situation is to have a proper understanding of why you lost your bankroll.

hope this is of some use

If I went bust I would revisit my hand histories and find out where I lost my $$$. I would be posting hands on forums like this one and taking any criticism of my play seriously. If it was just endless bad luck then I wont play that site again and move on. For me I can only really ever go bust on 1 site as over half of my bankroll sits in Neteller waiting to be deposited on the next decent bonus whilst the rest will be on a couple of sites. If I've gone bust through poor play then I'll go back to basics and seek out a free bankroll from somewhere and keep my remaining bankroll for when I'm an improved player.

If I go bust I will buy more poker books and read them. Then I would redeposit, possibly join a training site, and play within my bankroll to try to become a winning player.

If I go bust again, I'll probably take alot of time away from Poker but seeing how my BR requirements for games are too big now, I can avoid most of the pitfalls I've encountered in the past and I can handle downswings like I had the other day where I dropped $350 in 9 hours (Recovered most of it today playing 2 hours lol). but my BR requires are stuff like: 120 buyins for 1 table SnGs, between 100-250 Buyins for MTTs and 35 BIs for HUSnGs. Any 1 table SnGs and any cash games I play, I 4 table at the min.

Edit: The big reason for the big vary in the MTTs buyin is, if I have book on most of the players in the tourney, I'll lean towards the 100, but If I don't, I'll lean more towards the 250. Occassionally, i'll play a game that is 1.2% of my BR (MTT) if I am playing a superior game that day and I feel I can play effectivly in all situations.
