Almost every person on my mother's side of the family plays poker. As far as my memory goes back, they always have. There is rarely an extended gathering where poker isn't played, even if everyone plays for micro limits live. Because of this, I was familiar with the game from a very young age and was playing as soon as I could read my own hand. Those were brutal times and I learned a lot. When it comes to the game, my family has alligator blood. It's one reason they play small... because they have no problems taking every last penny you have. I used to remember getting birthday money and losing it soon after. During my early years, I lost pretty much every liquid asset a 5-6 year old can have... mostly candy and change.
Played with cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and just about everyone else. And we played all the time. I did eventually learn enough to become a winner... if only out of necessity. And still am able to take very small stakes seriously when I play because of that history. Even these days, we might play 2/5 cent NL when we get together and think nothing of it. Of course, back then it was only draw and stud (5 and 7 card) and we still play those games too.
After that, I pretty much played consistently whenever I could find a small stakes game. It was pretty hard to do that until high school and even then it wasn't regular. In college there were a few of us who would get together and play. Shortly after that... the Moneymaker thing happened... and I can find a game all the time and almost any level. I was also introduced to the concept of online poker at the same time -- which I had never heard of before despite being a huge computer geek. It was several years before I was willing to put real money online though because I was much more comfortable risking it live.
Basically, I have played forever. But it is funny. I still love 7 stud... and when I play live at the local card-room, I am the only player under 60 there. I look very out of place. But I like that, in a way. I am often mistaken for a hold-em player who sat at the wrong table. We still play some Canadian 5 stud among family... but I don't know anyone who plays 5 stud outside my family. |
