Be Patient! Especially in cash games. There's no need to rush, another hand is coming quickly.

Default Study

Study, Study, play, play.

Read books, mags, online articles, forums, play. You will develop your own style as your poker experience grows.

As you play more and more you should find yourself playing less hands and raking more pots. Learn to fold any hand and do not let the little things bother you. If you folded rags and they hit at the flop, tell yourself you will fold those rags the next time, hindsight is 20-20. Try not to chase, if you are beaten to start it is hard to catch up consistantly.

Good advice for beginners is Bankroll Management. Play within your means, risk no more than 5% of your roll for any tourney or ring game. Down swings happen for the best of players, make sure your wad can absorb the losses. Follow bankroll rules and you will find your account will steadily increase.

If you are a true rookie, be aware it will take some time to aquire not only a personal style, but the true poker instincts that come from within. In time, you will turn the corner, you will start to have true poker thoughts, not math or card values, but gut feelings that lead you to the proper decision in any circumstance.

Remember all poker players make mistakes and wrong decisions, learn from them, do not let them bother you, but remember for next time.

See you on the virtual felt

definitely study, practice, and over all else be patient. learn to fold when you are beat, no matter how good your hand looked pre-flop. your pre-flop hand doesn't decide if you win or lose....it is the board cards and the other players' cards which will inevitably decide your fate.

one of the best pieces of advice I can give is to not get overexcited or attached to a certain hand. Some people will play AA all the way through the hand no matter what is on the board and what other people are betting. Some people will raise with 7 3 off suit every time because it's their "lucky hand" and they "always hit with it."

Also, when you are begginning player, read up on tons of different articles. There is a ton of information out there just waiting to be consumed. There are also many different strategies out there that different players are successful with. Try different strategies and find the combination that works best for you.

I'm definitely guilty of playing the wrong hands. For some reason I've always loved KJ suited and I'll play it under the gun all the time even when I know I shouldn't. Just one of those hands....

MANAGE YOUR BANKROLL!!!!! I worked my way up from $50 to about $500 then started playing huge buy in tournaments like $30+3 and lost a lot of them. I think I would have been a lot more successful if I had gone up slowly instead of jumped up

My best advice would be to watch your bankroll management. And after a bad beat, get up and walk away for awhile do something else. Don't try and get your money back immediatly. Cause trurst me badbeats will happen, and people will play like complete morons and win. Do not lose your entire stack trying to get them back

Heads up is a whole nother animal compared with a full table game...in heads up, any two suited or any face card is considered a good value...not the case in a full table game...I think advising someone to start of with heads up is telling them it's okay to play loosey goosey...I dunno...Just a thought...

I agree, heads up is more like lotto if you are a begginning player. In order to be successful heads up you have to be good with different strategies and adjust to the player you are against.

It takes a lot of experience to succeed in poker but it's even more important playing heads up

stop being so literal. Obviously J2 isn't a GOOD hand in Heads up, but it's most definitely playable, wheras I wouldn't think twice about tossing it in any other game. She just saying that heads up is a different and much more complicated style of play that you need to be successful. Therefore, if it's more complicated it shouldn't be played by begginers because they will most likely lose the majority of the time.

watching poker on TV is a horrible way to learn, it is mostly edited for entertainment, not for a learning tool.

If you want to watch poker to Learn, you need to join Cardrunners, PokerXfactor, or another of the online training sites.

I've never tried one of those sites, is it worth the money? Has anyone done one of the training things?

Wrong. The easiest game to analyze is headsup. Only two players. In fact there is a solution to the game, which might not be true for a game with many players. Principles learned in headsup can easily be used when playing against many players though. Clearly you have to be more tight against many players but the aggression can often stay.

Besides, playing 9 others will bore you to tilt unless you play many tables. Also with many tables, how can you learn to read your opponents?
